The Planning Minister Rob Stokes announced new projects for the M5 with key features including,

  1. 9Km of new motorway Tunnels, line-marked for 2 traffic lanes in each direction, if required space for 3 lanes in the future.
  2. Widening and re-aligning the existing M5 East Motorway just east of King Georges Road
  3. A new interchange at St Peters and 2 road bridges across Alexandra Canal
  4. Streets upgrades around St Peters Interchange
  5. About 14 km of new and upgraded shared, pedestrian and cycle paths.
  6. New bridges across Alexandra Canal and Campbell Road, St Peters.
  7. Taller, wider and less steep tunnels than the existing M5 East resulting in a smoother ride for motorists, reducing emissions and improving air quality outcomes.

NSW Planning Minister approves the WestConnex New M5 Project

Rob Stokes, the NSW Planning Minister has announced approval of a plan for the WestConnex New M5 project.

The latest project will link the upgraded King Georges Road Interchange on the M5 East Motorway at Beverley Hills and run via twin tunnels to St Peters.

The community’s concerns regarding open public space, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure and the environment have been taken into consideration with a series of conditions set out by the minister.

The government says the new project will reduce congestion, improve travel times and traffic safety.

Increase in M5 South West Motorway Toll

On the M5 South West Motorway, the car and motorcycle toll has risen by $0.01 as of 1 April 2016, with the heavy vehicle toll rising $0.50.

The toll will now cost :

  • for class 2 vehicles- cars and motorcycles: $4.50
  • for class 4 vehicles – heavy vehicles: $12.57
